About See

See is the author of “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane,” “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” “Peony in Love,” “Shanghai Girls,” “China Dolls” and “Dreams of Joy.” One of her famed novels, “On Gold Mountain,” tells the story of her family’s settlement in Los Angeles as Chinese Americans. See has also authored a mystery series set in China.

See is an incredibly accomplished author. She has had her novels published in 39 languages and received the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Association of Southern California and the History Maker’s Award from the Chinese American Museum.

Further to add to her list of accomplishments, See was named the National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women (OCAW). OCAW, for the past 45 years, has pushed toward equality and empowerment, and gives their National Woman of the Year award with high honors.

Since 2000, See has written the Libretto for the Los Angeles Opera based on “On Gold Mountain,” curated the 12-year-long exhibition “On Gold Mountain: A Chinese American Experience” at the Autry Museum and also curated the exhibition — a retrospective of artist Tyrus Wong — for the grand opening of the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles.

As a resident of Los Angeles, See has designed a walking tour of L.A.’s Chinatown and wrote a guidebook for Angels Walk L.A., celebrating the opening of MTA’s Chinatown station. Further, she is a longtime trustee of the University of California Press Foundation and endowed the Lisa See Endowment Fund in Southern California History and Culture.
