The Duluth Police Department recently reported a significant decrease in crime from January to October 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This year, burglaries have been down by 56%, robberies by 57% and stolen vehicles by 52%.

These impressive reductions highlight the efforts of the department and the community to make Duluth a safer place for all.

Key initiatives

According to the department, several key initiatives have contributed to this success:

High-quality policing and community engagement officers at the Duluth Police Department are highly trained and 100% committed to keeping our community safe. Not only do they care about the people they serve, but they consistently go above and beyond to ensure that the public feels safe, and criminals know they are not welcome. Officers actively listen to the needs and concerns of the community, which promotes positive relationships and a safer environment for all.

A new Public Safety Ambassadors Program launched earlier this year, which has proven to be a gamechanger. Ambassadors handle non-emergency reports and tasks that traditionally required an officer’s response. This allows officers to remain on patrol and in service for longer periods, increasing their availability to proactively address issues in the community.

The Duluth Police Department has leveraged cutting-edge technology through the Real-Time Crime Center, enhancing their ability to monitor and address criminal activity. By increasing the number of cameras strategically placed throughout the city, officers and detectives have received valuable real-time intelligence. These tools not only assist in investigations but also actively monitor for suspicious activity, improving response times and helping deter crimes before they occur.

Looking forward to 2025

“This reduction in crime is a credit to the outstanding work being done by our police officers and public safety ambassadors, our innovative use of technology and to the strong partnerships we have created within the community,” said Chief Jacquelyn Carruth. “Keeping Duluth safe is a team effort, and I am thankful we have so many hard-working employees and so many engaged and supportive people here in our great city. I look forward to this trend continuing into the new year.”
