Dunwoody property owners can register with Trees Atlanta to have up to two shade trees planted in their front yards for free.

For the third year, the City of Dunwoody is partnering with Trees Atlanta to plant up to 80 shade trees in front yards across Dunwoody. Property owners interested in being part of the program can submit an online application. Trees will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The Front Yard Tree Program by Trees Atlanta has been a big success in Dunwoody,” said Dunwoody Community Development Director Richard McLeod. “From the beginning, [our] city council has seen the value in a program that empowers residents to play a direct role in protecting and building up Dunwoody’s tree canopy.”

Trees Atlanta

Trees Atlanta, a nonprofit organization committed to the care and replenishment of metro Atlanta’s urban forest, manages the processing of tree requests and coordinates with each homeowner to select, place and install up to two front yard trees per yard through this program.

A total of 134 front yard trees have been planted through the Dunwoody program, beginning with the 2022-23 planting season. Planting for 2025 will continue through March.

“Dunwoody residents continued to demonstrate their love for trees last year, as we planted all 80 trees allocated to Dunwoody’s Front Yard Tree Program,” said Mike Vinciquerra, business development director for Trees Atlanta. “We’re grateful to residents for their interest and to city officials for committing to the program for a third year.”

The details

There is no cost to property owners. The new trees must be planted on private property within 35 feet of a right-of-way. After planting, property owners are responsible for watering and maintaining the new trees.
