Dunwoody Earns Tree City USA Recognition for 13th Consecutive Year

The designation comes as the city prepares to celebrate Georgia Arbor Day on February 21.

The City of Dunwoody is once again being honored as a Tree City USA, marking its 13th consecutive year of commitment to urban forest management. This designation reaffirms Dunwoody’s dedication to preserving and enhancing its tree canopy, a vital part of the city’s sustainability efforts.

To celebrate this achievement and Georgia Arbor Day on Friday, February 21, city leaders will host a special tree planting ceremony at 11 a.m. near the Brook Run Arboretum Pavilion (4470 N. Peachtree Road).

Residents are invited to join representatives from the Dunwoody City Council, Parks & Recreation, Community Development and the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee as they plant a tree in honor of the occasion.

“We remain committed to protecting our tree canopy and finding new ways to enhance it,” said Dunwoody Arborist Amy Bledsoe. “Trees provide immense benefits to our community — improving air quality, increasing property values, reducing stress and creating habitats for wildlife.”

Tree City USA

The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes communities that meet four key criteria:

  • Maintaining a tree board or department
  • Enforcing a tree care ordinance
  • Allocating at least $2 per capita for community forestry
  • Hosting an Arbor Day observance with a formal proclamation

“Tree City USA communities experience firsthand the benefits of a thriving urban forest,” said Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Dunwoody’s commitment ensures that future generations will continue to enjoy these benefits for years to come.”

Dunwoody’s urban forestry efforts are driven by strong community engagement. Since 2013, the city has partnered with Trees Atlanta and local volunteers to plant more than 2,000 trees, including 100 trees planted during this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Additionally, for the third consecutive year, Dunwoody is participating in the Front Yard Tree Planting Program, a Trees Atlanta initiative that offers free shade tree plantings to residents.
