Walk alongside larger-than-life metal sculptures of nature’s iconic residents at Fernbank Museum’s newest exhibit, “Forest Forms,” which opens June 29. Ranging from five feet tall to 20 feet tall, the creations in this artistic outdoor exhibit can be explored in WildWoods through Sept. 29, 2024.
“Forest Forms” is comprised of 18 sculptures of plants and animals, including a family of foxes, flowers, rabbits, a snake archway, a peacock and more. These towering artworks are made from powder-coated steel that depict a distinct line-work style similar to traditional line drawings.
Each elements in this exhibit will be accompanied by fact signage that will help guests learn more about the plants and animals that inspired the artworks in the exhibit. The style depicted in this exhibit is ideal for guests seeking explorative outdoor artistry with social media-worthy photo opportunities.
The artist, Huelani Mei, used the line-work style evident in “Forest Forms” to show the form, movement and rhythm she observes while enjoying outdoor activities. Reflected in her work is also the joy and peace that nature brings her, which she hopes sparks a moment of reflection and wonder in Fernbank’s guests.
Mei is a graduate of Georgia State University with a bachelor’s degree in sculpture and fine arts. Beginning as a scenic artist for hotels and museums, she now runs her own metal fabrication shop in Atlanta called Hue Designs, where she works on private commissions and public art pieces.
“When you think of art exhibitions, you don’t typically think of Fernbank or natural history museums,” said Hannah Shannon, Director of Exhibitions.
“But as art is an important part of STEAM learning, we’re excited for the sculpture exhibition, Forest Forms, to open. It will be a great way to experience nature and art together in our outdoor environment, WildWoods,” she added.
