The Dunwoody Police Department has partnered with Dunwoody Parks and Recreation to install four SaveStations in public parks.
In a first for metro Atlanta, the City of Dunwoody has installed four SaveStations equipped with life-saving Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public parks. These devices are designed to provide immediate assistance in the event of cardiac emergencies.
City leaders and staff officially unveiled the first SaveStation at the Brook Run Park playground on February 6. Additional SaveStations are located at Two Bridges Park, Pernoshal Park and the Brook Run Park multi-use fields, ensuring broad accessibility across the community.
“SaveStations are a powerful tool for saving lives by providing public access to AEDs,” said Dunwoody Police Chief Mike Carlson. “When it comes to cardiac arrest, every second counts. Research shows that combining CPR with an AED can dramatically increase the chances of survival.”
How SaveStation works
Each SaveStation cabinet houses a publicly accessible AED designed for easy use by anyone in emergencies. When the cabinet is opened, an alarm sounds and while emergency dispatchers are notified, it’s also critical to call 911 immediately.
The AED provides clear, audible instructions and includes visual diagrams to guide users through the process, so no training is needed. Once the pads are applied, the AED evaluates the patient’s heart rhythm and administers a shock only if necessary, ensuring safe and effective use.
Bridging the gap in emergency care
“By installing SaveStations in public parks and recreation areas, we want people to become more aware of AEDs and more comfortable with the idea of using one in an emergency,” said Dunwoody Parks and Recreation Director Rachel Waldron.
“AEDs are simple-to-use devices that can help restore a normal heart rhythm during a cardiac arrest, potentially saving lives.”
What to do in a cardiac emergency
“If there’s a cardiac emergency, call 911, start CPR and send someone to retrieve an AED,” Chief Carlson added. “These steps can make all the difference.”
Good Samaritan laws provide protection from civil liability.
Bringing SaveStations to Dunwoody
The SaveStations are located in Dunwoody’s busiest parks. They’re under video surveillance to help keep them secure.
“Along with several council members, I saw a SaveStation demonstration at a conference last year, and we were impressed,” said Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch. “I’m thrilled that our City Manager and staff made it a priority to provide public access to this life-saving technology.”
