Completion of the Oakbrook Parkway project enhances safety and connectivity in District 2
Gateway85 Community Improvement District (CID), in partnership with Gwinnett County, has announced the completion of the Oakbrook Parkway sidewalk, enhancing pedestrian safety, mobility and accessibility across the district.
Since its inception almost 20 years ago, Gateway85 CID has been committed to creating a safer and more connected community, leading efforts to add over 20 miles of sidewalks, mid-block crossings and improved lighting throughout the area.
The latest initiative includes the installation of a 1.5-mile sidewalk along Oakbrook Parkway between Jimmy Carter Blvd. and Indian Trail Lilburn Rd. This area, home to numerous businesses, previously lacked safe walking paths on half of the roadway. The completion of this project has helped improve safety along this busy road.
Celebrating the project
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the sidewalk was held at First Senior Center with support from Von Tran, executive director of the center, to celebrate and officially open this new addition.
“Beyond safety and health, sidewalks enhance our local economy. By increasing accessibility, we attract more foot traffic to local businesses, helping them thrive,” said Ben Ku, District 2 Commissioner. “As we cut this ribbon today, let’s celebrate not just the completion of a sidewalk, but the promise of a safer, healthier and more connected community.”
The celebration also highlighted other recent events Gateway85 has undertaken, including the cleanup of over 100 miles of right-of-way within the 14-square-mile district, the addition of the new Ride Gwinnett microtransit service and the recent launch of the Great American Dream Hall of Fame. The inaugural inductees for that program were honored in early October at the 2nd Annual Global Media Mixer hosted by the Atlanta Press Club.
Partnership and success
With the success of these recent projects, Gateway85 is proud of the tremendous effect the organization and their partners have had on business development and quality of life in the district around Jimmy Carter Blvd., nicknamed the “Hub of World Diversity.”
Emory Morsberger, executive director of Gateway85, points to that amazing multi-cultural diversity and the role that immigrants are playing to fulfill jobs and build the economy in the area, as well as the collaboration between Gateway85 CID and Gwinnett County, as examples of the power of partnership in driving community development and infrastructure improvements.
“I want to highlight the long-standing partnership between Gateway85 CID and the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation,” Morsberger said. “Their commitment to excellence and their ability to turn vision into action have been truly invaluable. Whether it’s roadway improvements, traffic management or projects like today’s sidewalk, Gwinnett DOT has consistently been an incredible and forward-thinking partner.” The community is thriving because it is so well connected, literally and figuratively.
